NYC Exhibition, 2022

Passover in the Mea Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, one of the most extreme religious neighborhoods in Jerusalem, during the observance of one of the holiday mitzvot "burning chametz,” is burning the leftover flour that is forbidden to be eaten during the holiday. The fire takes place outside the house and is accompanied by prayers for the holiday. Only men are allowed to come to the fire area.

The image shows the contrasts created in the scene in opposite layers, a young girl is seen with her back to the scene of the fire in contrast to all others.

When I travelled Ghana’s South by taxi a couple of years ago, we stopped in a small village. Many houses and shacks were painted red there. I was told that Vodafone had provided free paint, the inhabitants had accepted and transformed their houses into advertising space.

This picture was shot during my last day in Armenia. Driving through a small border town, I noticed a dog proudly looking around from a balcony in the shell of an apartment.

This photograph was taken through the window of a coffee shop in my local town of Exeter. The lady sat just in front of the window with her back to me. As I was walking past, my eye caught her white jacket and hair, and I knew there was a good opportunity to take an image with striking contrast due to her proximity to the window and the shadows of the coffee shop. She was just turning the page of her paper which made for a much more interesting image. I was thrilled it turned out how I imagined.

This image was made in Varanasi, India. India is an incredible, vibrant, colorful and chaotic country, and while there I did make images that reflect that reality. But in this image I chose to do what I usually do in street photography; To cut through the chaos and see the order, organization, beauty, and calm in moments of everyday life.

This woman was in NYC with a group protesting the effects of plastics on our environment. The look on her face says it all about her level of concern about this issue. And the light at the moment was really wonderful, both illuminating her and separating her from the crowd of people she was with.

When we walk around New York City its so easy to see its sheer vastness: the architecture, the infrastructure, the commerce, the sensory onslaught and the incessant supply of humanity. That staggering, impenetrable vastness is what makes this city both endlessly fascinating and incredibly infuriating; and it’s easy to get wrapped up in the blunt, visceral emotion that the hugeness of the city evokes in us. It’s easy to forget that the dense forest is, in reality, a collection of trees—all of them breathing, growing, living, and dying, one beside the other. I am a lifelong New Yorker. This city is my home, and I love it, and its people, very deeply. So, with my camera, I strive to pay attention to the individuals that breathe, grow, and live here. Through my photography, I want to cast their jetsam in beauty, their silhouettes in reverence, their anonymity in recognition, their hustle in stillness. Bringing awareness to the city’s small and elegant moments is, for me, an act of love and devotion—both to my home, and to the strangers with whom I live.

This image was taken in Pipar, India. I was on that street for quite some time photographing the women and children who were very welcoming. This mother was happy to pose for me and I shot several frames of her. But it was when her child darted into the frame of the doorway behind her that I knew I had my image.

COVID, election uncertainty, systemic racism, and the fundamental polarization of values and truth have plagued us in 2020. None of us feel whole. All of us feel shattered.

I was working with the harsh midday light that day, looking for contrast, silhouettes, and shadows, which I saw with the figure approaching on the right. Then, suddenly, I saw the iconically-long CVS receipt unfurl, framing the shadow and making the image for me. Rewards indeed!

This image is part of a series entitled, “Silhouettes in the City.” A glimpse into other people’s stories might give us insight into our own. This silhouette creates visual tension by eliminating distracting elements and paring the image down to its essentials, while the anonymity of the figure allows it to act as a placeholder for anyone and everyone. Sparked by the mysterious yet intimate portrayal of this unidentified figure, the viewer can imagine themselves as part of the narrative.

I have been photographing snowstorms in NYC for several years. It has become a subset of my street photography, and a distinct body of work in its own right. When the snow blankets the city, it covers it with a layer of beauty, peace, and calm that is often hidden in the daily freneticism that is life in the city.

I was photographing around Washington Square Park in NYC not realizing that it was the day of NYU's graduation. I came upon this young woman graduate, joyously throwing her mortarboard in the air to celebrate her accomplishment while standing next to a bunch of balloons.. Her joy and happiness were palpable and hopefully I was able to capture that feeling in this image.

There was so much that appealed to me about this image. I love young woman's stance, the layered quality to the photograph, the geometry and the light. But what I like most is its surreal and ambiguous nature. Like so much in life, it is not quite what it seems.

Washington Square Park in the summer is always a wonderful place to photograph in New York. The life, the light, the activity are all vibrant and special. On this day, a little boy was playing happily in the fountain in the park. Just when the light was right, he raised his arms with joy. And I was lucky enough to capture it.

I know this corner of NYC well and have always loved the blue walls of the building, so it is a place I will go to often and wait for something interesting to photograph. On this day, there were many things about this scene that I liked....the position of the 3 people, the lifted foot, the water bottle the braids of the woman in the foreground. Often it is small details that can make an image special for me.

Mr. Horace Thomas on his way home after the Black Lives Matter march. I asked to take his photograph. We talked about the buttons on his jacket. And our hopes for a future we both will likely never know. Behind him the mural of musicians played a silent song. At the cafe that stood on this corner long ago. Mr. Thomas is 70. His eyes glowed. Despite everything, despite time.

My digital camera, protected by a special housing that lets me shoot underwater, is my tool for exploring the human experience of the water. In my “Aquatic Street” series, shot at public beaches throughout the world, I am drawn to unguarded moments with my subjects as I capture beach culture from the vantage point of a swimmer. "The Queue" was captured in Maui, Hawaii in 2016. I swam out to Black Rock with the intention of photographing jumpers as they descended into the water. During a lull, I found myself in a unique position to capture the perfect line of bodies moving from one corner of the frame to the other. Young underwater swimmers on the left make their orderly way below the surface, emerging on the right to scramble up a rugged shoreline. My goal while shooting is to recognize what is in front of me, even if it’s not what I set out to capture. Photographing from the water presents a myriad of technical and physical challenges, but the hard work is worth it during moments such as this.

My digital camera, protected by a special cover that lets me shoot in water, is my tool for exploring the human experience of water. This photograph was captured in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon in Grindavic, Iceland, and is part of my ongoing series of street photographs captured in water. The Blue Lagoon draws tourists from around the world. Travelers come to soak in the healing waters and replenish their skin with silica mud masks. The scene has an otherworldly quality -- grey skies, steam rising from the water, and people casually milling about with white masks on their faces. Certain people draw you in, and in this case, the woman's serious expression coupled with her silica mask caught my attention. I love the contrast between the white mask and the woman's skin and hair as she is surrounded by milky water and steam.

Certain people draw you in when you are shooting street photography. I was photographing on the tiny island of Favignana off the coast of Sicily in 2018. I saw this particular gentleman entering the water, and I loved everything about him. I swam toward him, keeping my camera low so as not to distract him. I shot several frames, but only later did I notice the wisp of the cloud behind him, like wings emerging from his shoulders. He looks like a Roman God on holiday.

I swim with my camera in a protective housing to capture street-inspired photographs of people enjoying the water. This particular photograph was captured in a wave pool at an amusement park. The pool was crowded with children and families. I work the scene much like any other crowd, looking for something interesting to happen. In this case, a young swimmer dipped below the surface to see what I was up to. I love her direct gaze into the lens and the refraction of color and light around her head. Bodies of other swimmers frame the scene in a golden spiral.

I was photographing this particular beach in Split, Croatia, in the summer of 2019. Large groups of local children gather to jump and socialize at the end of a long rocky jetty. I photographed the scene from in and out of the water, but this particular photo of a young girl returning to climb the rocky jetty was a favorite from that day. I love photographing beaches. There is always so much joy in the air.

Ahead of Lunar New Year, crowds gathered in Hong Kong’s sprawling Victoria Park. I arrived near sunset, curious to observe for the first time since moving there how the festivities would manifest.

The scene was pleasantly chaotic, buzzing with celebratory energy and popping with color. Seeking more subtle moments, I noticed this little girl peering through her translucent pink ball, as the reflection of trees and the city’s iconic skyline appeared to merge with her and her father’s hair.

I was struck by the contrast of her melancholy visage with the surrounding joyful scene, left wondering what she was contemplating.

Days before we moved to NYC from Rotterdam, I realized in 3 years, I had never photographed within the city's main train station. Transiting through Centraal one final time, I paused to walk its perimeter and became newly-captivated by the front vestibule, bathed in afternoon light. It was as if I was seeing it for the first time. I photographed as this woman entered the frame, and the moment felt special, warm, personal. I knew this would soon be a memory, a record of one of my last experiences in this place I once called home.

Amid continued anti-Asian and Pacific Islander (API) hate, Deb Fong has been photographing as a critical part of her journey toward re-discovery of her identity, while amplifying the humanity and cultures of her community. There are moments of fear and grief, yet there are equal moments of joy and celebration. This image, captured at the 2022 Lunar New Year Parade in Manhattan's Chinatown, embodies a sense of suspended reality, an in-between stage of uncertainty yet still luminous optimism. We are all aware of darkness around us, yet we still seek light, hope, and a stronger future - because we must.

On Lunar New Year, pulsating energy infuses the annual parade through Manhattan’s Chinatown. Beyond the boisterous celebratory moments, I also seek the quieter ones, when people honoring the holiday are just being themselves, absorbing their surroundings. This was one such moment, when a traditionally-dressed emcee had a chance to breathe and take in the confetti- and firecracker-laden streets. Framed between revelers and the community’s iconic storefront signage, she seemed calm, content, self-reflective. With this ethereal scene, I love its echoing warm colors–and that it could be in almost any Chinatown in the world or in Asia itself.

This elegantly visceral, deeply moving tribute to celebrated choreographer and dancer Jennifer Muller, who had recently passed, carried both the weight of her loss and the lightness she inspired. As the dancers turned and locked arms, these geese took poetic flight. Hovering above, they mirrored the dancers’ movements, seemingly in harmony and empathy. With a rainbow of skin color set against the backdrop of Manhattan, this image highlights the talent and diversity of communities who really make this city shine.

In visiting my old neighborhood, which has transitioned to primarily Latinx families, I wandered into a community dance studio where boys and girls were preparing for an upcoming performance of traditional Hispanic dances. Watching the performers, I noticed one particular girl with a flair and attitude that seemed to match the personality of another Latina artist I have always admired. The dancing AND the attitude of this child seemed to grow as the practice progressed. I chose the angle because her attitudinal size was much larger than me (or Frida). BRAVA chica!

My intent in observation of everyday life as I encounter it is to record connections, relationships and bonds whether they are obvious or subtle. This photo was made after a rather lengthy ride on the subway. The communication between the couple had been verbal and through body language which to me is much more profound and indicative of a connection or bond. Throughout their interaction, there was a tenderness of young love which I find to be reaffirming in a world where we are often very disconnected.

Throughout Mexico, I observe that any sense of separation, isolation, or absolute independence within the culture is rare. A sense of community, reliance on others and joy in every aspect of the smallest of interactions is a way of life. This solid commotion whether in work, family, or festival is absolute. The beauty of noticed interactions is that the love of fellow man also extends to others, to strangers, to outsiders. In all situations, I feel drawn in to each simple gesture of sharing, culture, and community.

I witnessed complimentary colours were playing in the dusk hour of Varanasi sky at Manikarnika ghat which is the famous cremation ground and I saw cocks were playing here and there. Varanasi is one of the ancient cities which celebrates not only life but also death . For me Blue and Yellow these two dominating colours are depicting the harmony between life and death here. I knew blue hour stays only for few minutes and when the man entered in frame walking I got the cock at the desires position which is creating a diagonal tension in the fame.

In front of the vast sea I witnessed a woman walking while carrying a fish which is bigger that her size. Her presence in front of the vast nature is symbolic to me . This image tells a story a strong woman who lives beside the sea and work hard . The flow of her cloth in the same direction she is walking leads my eyes through the frame. Sometime Simple images tell more powerful story in simple way .

This man is vested with a mission at the Ganges, Kolkata. He feeds disappearing pigeons with food and water. The pigeons are getting endangered because of pollution and scarcity of greenery. This problem is getting crucial on a global scale, and this message should be echoed via this man via the soil of Kolkata. My shot captures a winged burden to metaphorically dispel a global message to all the netizens: “Save Us All to Keep the Earth Sustainable!”

I have taken this photograph in Rajasthan India. Elephant safari is one of the very popular activities in Rajasthan as this place is well known for it's palaces and forts. This is Amber fort in Jaipur,Rajasthan.All Mahout were resting with their trained elephants when I visited this place.
I saw layers with expressions and all those eyes including the eye of that elephant attracted me so much. I went close and clicked at the moment when the other guy started smoking .I tried to fill the frame with strong elements and expressions. Elephant is symbol of power and here in this picture all men with strong eye connections are also denoting power. All eyes are also forming a diagonal line which creates more power in the frame. So I want my viewers to feel the power.

Kumbh Mela, the largest pilgrimage and festival in India, is celebrated in a cycle of 12 years gap and in four places in India.

Last year for the first time, I witnessed this massive fair in Allahabad. In an overcrowded place, this scene suddenly appeared before my camera. I loved the dominating red color all around the frame and the strong gaze with wrinkled eyes underneath the red veil. I also liked the 3 men popping out little bit in between the gaps which is filled my frame. This is a photograph representing power and positivity.

This photograph is like a broken dream. They are scattered but connected somehow? I found this broken front glass of a car in a Pushkar fair. I went close to it and I realized this glass had immense opportunity to create drama in a photograph. So I waited for few good minutes to get the desired frame.

As the covid lockdown was lifted, I hit the streets of Kolkata and on one fine evening when it was raining and evening light was also there at the same time for a few good seconds , this girl appeared from nowhere and made my frame.

This is eternal Varanasi, believed to be older than history, which resides beside the Ganges. People from all over the world come here to experience the spiritual world along with the majestic view of the river. I was roaming around the riverbanks and noticed how wonderfully all elements were placed in layers. I waited for the perfect moment to press the shutter. As a street photographer, I always enjoy unfolding magical moments that can happen within a fraction of a second.

Pushkar Fair, One of the World's biggest cattle fairs, is held every year in Pushkar, Rajasthan. The rich colors and textures, raw emotions, and beautiful light make this a paradise for street photographers. I was attracted by the colors and textures of these tents, and the light was strong, I was getting dark shadows on this beautiful background. The stage was set for me and within a few minutes I got this boy who was passing by. He made sudden eye contact, and I got the shadow of the camel also.

At a Defend Black Women March in Washington D.C. on June 19th, 2020 I saw Mike. He carried a carefree energy I recognized. As we began having a deep conversation on why the march was important, we discovered that we’re both from Southeast, D.C. Mike informed me that he'd just come home from jail a few weeks ago after 10 years. He expressed how badly he wants to ensure that Black women are safe.

During a 2019 protest where White Supremacists and Trump Supporters came to have meeting near the White House, people from all walks of life came together to shut the meeting down. Pictured is a Black person and a Queer person who has join togethers to show the world that love will win any battle.

It was Times Square at noon, crowded with people. Amid the hustle, I noticed a woman, dressed in pink and bathed in exquisite light. Her face was everything; it was all I saw in the moments before I made the portrait. I aimed to capture her glow and her soul.

While at a Santeria dance demonstration, I initially focused on the costumed dancers, then I turned around and saw these young boys leaping on and off a bench. They were having such a good time together – not a care in the world, confident, literally jumping for joy. This was such a happy moment, and I remember hoping that they would never lose their spirit.

This woman was singing in the aisles of the local market on the morning of Three Kings Day, a very special day for children in Mexico and Catholic groups. That day, I visited the local market and noticed that there was joy in the aisles: vendors accompanied by wrestlers were giving away balls while taking pictures and giving autographs to visitors and children.

The photo was taken in the Moscow metro. Elderly woman about 80 years old, reads a book in a special cover (a tradition from the Soviet Union - these reusable covers kept books in good condition). The second woman, 45-50 years old, is talking to someone on an old push-button telephone. And in the center of the photo sits a new generation with smartphones. I thought it was very symbolic to take this picture with my old film camera.

It means finding the center of our being in order to connect with everything else around us. The more we sense and feel this connection, the more we come to understand who we are and how we have been connected to the rest of the universe within ourselves. We see light when we close our eyes.

I met James for the first time last year in union square, nyc where he was selling street art; I was interested in buying one piece so we started talking ; his face was really beat up that day and his arm was in a cast ; he didn t allow me a picture which I totally understood. I kept running into him over this past year but enable to take a picture because he was either too wasted or hanging out with the wrong crowd .

Finally end of this summer (2018) I was able to photograph him as he was sober as not in bad shape as usual (same spot union square).

Why I took this photo: I am always looking for interesting people in the street;I am obsessed with faces ; I like to show diversity especially in this time when racism and hatred are on the rise ;he has charisma and although he is a ”Bad boy” he was always nice to me and he said he appreciate me for the support.

I started documenting youth gathering in the park as soon as Covid 19 cases started decreasing after being in one of the US epicenters.

I noticed them sitting on the stairs by Union Square NYC. They seemed totally detached from the rest of the crowd and lost in their own world. I didn’t want to bother them but couldn’t stop looking at them. When I approached them to ask for a picture, I saw his scar and he started kissing her. In that moment I felt real love.

This photo was taken during the very early stages of the 2020 pandemic. I had a specific goal to document life in my city (in a safe manner) during this strange time.

Restaurants were shifting to take-out services only. I wanted to take photos through the window of this restaurant of employees wearing face masks, as that was fairly uncommon at the time.

This woman, a customer, was waiting for her order, leaning against a counter by the window with her back to me. She turned to look at me. I thought her gaze was so interesting through the rain droplets on the window. She gave me a little smile. She didn’t appear to be hesitant or uncomfortable, and did not duck away. She didn’t appear to be stressed by the pandemic situation or the bad weather.

That’s part of the street photography process. You start with one thing in mind et voilà, something else presents itself.

As a country that commonly knows the phrases “we move” and “suffering and smiling,” Nigeria is a community of strength. Life may not always offer breaks, but they can always rely on someone who is living a life similar to them. It’s through communal experiences that people tend to share a bond and relax. Even if the experience is pure chaos or headed towards it. This is a photo from my series on everyday workers and what it truly means to ‘suffer and smile.’ Bonds and emotions can still be felt or shared, as chaotic as life may get.

When I moved from Athens to Berlin, I had to understand and get used to both a different culture and a foreign language. Photography helped me to communicate and get closer to the people. It was the key to adjust to my new life and each day the streets would provide me with different experiences, each day I would discover new things.

One day, while I was walking quickly along one of the most beautiful streets in Berlin (Friedrichstrasse), a ladies’ impressive white hair caught my eye. As I saw her protruding from the high-rise buildings, I felt like she was in complete harmony with the city’s scenery, so I took a quick snap.

I was walking around in my neighborhood, not expecting any good subjects, since I know the area already very well.

But when I passed by one regular coffee shop, I anticipated the photo in front of me. I saw a girl framed by a beautiful reflection.

At the same time, I found the right angle to capture what I saw I had the luck, that the girl was turning to the camera.

I took this photo in 2021 in a ‘Badestrand,’ a bathing beach located in Berlin. After the quarantine due to a pandemic, it was the first time I was among so many people, and that caused contradictory feelings for me. Many families were there relaxing, enjoying the sun, or swimming carefree. I started taking pictures of the beach and swimmers, and I remember saying to myself, “Finally back to life and normalcy,” when I suddenly saw a mermaid sitting on the shore, pensive and keeping distance from others. Do they exist? I am sure they do.

From a far distance, I noticed a group of ultra-Orthodox youth. I walked towards them, as I approached, they were next to a big white modernist sculpture. the contrast was beautiful. Two of them were climbing up while the teacher in the background asked them to move on. Luckily I was there to catch the moment.

I took this photograph in Gastown Vancouver. It is a very vibrant area of the city that attracts tourists, rich people along with those who struggle with mental problems and addictions. I took this photo intuitively, being aligned with my situation as a woman in our society. Seeing the man sweeping is a rare view, so it made my heart fly. The winged heart was the best background that could have appeared. I think that photography is about capturing our inner world projected outside. It is also about the passion that is present in everyday, simply actions.

A photo is a cutting of reality, a selection of the photographer’s mind, which indicates to the viewer what part of reality the photographer wants them to see, a choice that, with slight modifications, could represent many different realities. I realized gradually that a photo can reference a specific time and place, yet can also suggest the existence of other things unseen. I took this photograph with that in mind. The cloth and subject are symbols of photographic selection, and the viewer is deprived of seeing the surrounding area.

I attended the protest about the killing of an innocent young black man by the police in 2022 outside police headquarters in London. The family are in mourning and seeking justice. The relative came off the stage and rushed into the arms of his friends who were waiting for him. I touched his hand to indicate my presence and took the picture.

The City of New York is a major source of inspiration and the connecting thread throughout my artistic practice. This photograph is part of a continuing personal project that I began in the summer of 1981 when a beloved Art Deco movie theatre was demolished to make room for a luxury high-rise. While many of the images in this series serve as records of places now mostly gone, they also play a role in my personal history, making this body of work a unique combination of historical document and visual diary.

I took his image spontaneously when I saw this scene, as my hand automatically grabbed the camera. Later, when I looked at the capture, I had to think about socially and culturally constructed concepts such as femininity and masculinity in Western society. This photograph expresses these ideas through the woman's red dress, her posture, dreamy butterfly wings, and the masculinity portrayed by the man who is clearly working, selling almonds, smoking, looking grumpy at me, and unbothered about his visual appearance. The contrast between the two social roles of women and men is perfectly captured and expressed in this image.

This image belongs to the series “From external to inner beauty” what was inspired by my personal observations, and ongoing debates about the self-perception by contemporary women in the 21st century, existing social pressure, and attempts to place a “value” on women based on their external looks. The photograph was taken late in the evening on the train towards Odense, Denmark in Mai 2019. “The Sleeping Beauty” was supposed to be awakened to a life by the love of a beautiful Prince. It is an old fairy-tale but there are still so many women in this world who believe that their value is being defined by both the external beauty and love of a romantic partner. Authentic loving relationships are great happiness sources but most of all they are a reflection of our relationship to ourselves. Every human being is a limitless universe with a unique spirit. Recognizing this, we are able to discover our inner beauty and source of great love inside of us that is healing, empowering, and truly awakening”.

In the midst of the Niko snow storm I headed to Coney Island, hoping to capture a more enigmatic side of a beach I had photographed many times before. I feel at home in the restlessness of a big city, but somehow find myself seeking quiet and eerie moments. Coney Island was deserted with the exception of a handful of curious photographers, and a few brave souls determined to go on with their exercise routine.

This photograph of two dogs playing at a circus in Valparaíso almost never saw the light of day. Although I was attracted to the situation right away - the two dogs playing, the shiny curtain, and the hide and seek possibilities that ensued! - I walked away feeling like my photograph didn’t live up to the image I had in my mind. A few months later, as I revisited my catalog, I felt I had discarded it too soon. These two dogs bring a smile to my face, and remind me to embrace the playful side of street photography!

Caleta Portales, the fish market in Valparaíso, is one of my favorite places to photograph in the Chilean seaport. I love the bustle of the market and the chance to disappear momentarily between the stands and shouts of the day’s catch.

On a summer day in late February, I set off for the market later than usual. The scenery in the late morning was quieter than I was used to: most of the fish for the day had been sold, fishermen were throwing their leftovers to eager seagulls, pelicans and sea lions, ready to wrap up for the day. I saw a man washing up at the communal sink and photographed the couple minutes of this pause. He seems to be washing his worries away with the rest.

Shooting at night in Times Square, I let myself be guided by available light and slipped into the crowd gathered in front of the screens. The captivating eyes staring back at people give this image a mysterious, somewhat ominous feel.

I moved to Valparaíso on a whim. I hadn’t planned on staying long, but whenever I thought I might be ready to leave, the city called to me. Wandering its streets I can see why the Chilean seaport became a muse and a myth. At times Valparaíso seems to be made of a succession of endearing characters, picturesque scenes, and improbable collages begging to be photographed. Slowly but decidedly, I look for something else: a moment when my cadence and the rhythm of the city will meet, a sense of respite, a mysterious harmony.

Living with the revolution in Cuba for over 60 years has been a complex journey. Many people supported the revolution's ideals, hoping for a fairer and more equitable society. However, years of oppression, inefficiencies, scarcities, embargo, isolation, ongoing poverty and economic difficulties, have taken a long enduring toll on today’s Cuba.

The generation that experienced and witnessed the revolutionary struggle was given hope for equality. Despite the adversities, “Ominira,” born post revolution, continues to carry the banner of her parents through her name, meaning freedom, independence, and liberation.

To get to know the streets is to go beyond them–exploring the intimacy beyond the façade of the mainstream. The streets of La Habana are colorful, vibrant, and full of soul, time-warped in the 1950's. I was drawn to open, rusted metal gates, small openings, venturing along narrow lanes, witnessing the daily life in its complexity or simplicity. This particular lane showed the basics of life, textures of neglect, graffiti replacing stucco, a solitary youth resting from washing the pavement in his tucked away corner. This was his life.

One month into the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, I visited Medyka, a small Polish town and border crossing from Ukraine.

The Ukrainian refugees, mainly women, children and the elderly, were briefly processed at the Medyka border before taken by bus to Przemyśl for further processing and distribution throughout Europe.

Poland showed its unity crossing its flag with that of Ukraine's. This young child waits with her mother on a bus and unknowingly in her reflection places her hand on her nation’s flag as she takes her last glimpse of her homeland, the country she is fleeing.

After spending quite some time in India, I observed the heavy male dominance on the streets. One day, I stumbled upon an alley to find this group of women walking resiliently.

I was about to leave after spending a Friday afternoon in this beautiful mosque when among so many people I noticed this group of children sitting aligned, looking at the birds in the sky.

Later that day I read that the mosque is also called "the mosque commanding a view of the world,” which made that moment even more special.

This photo, taken in September 2020, is part of an ongoing series called 'Benches of Seaside Heights.' On bright summer days, I walk up and down the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, NJ, and take at least one candid photo of every single occupied bench. I don’t stop to look, or think, or compose, or try to pick the right moment. I take a few shots, without looking, and move on. I intend to continue this series indefinitely, both as an exploration of human behavior, and a chronicle of Seaside’s visitors over time.

I dare to say D. Luís I bridge in Porto, Portugal, is one of the most photographed bridges of the world, and every time I’m there, I think of how can I make an exquisite image from it. Luckily for me it has been under construction, and by the end of the day, the light is always magnificent against the temporary protection fence. On the day this photo was taken, as always, the bridge was full of passersby that cross Douro River. I picked through a small opening in the fence and, how exciting, there it was my photo.

I am always drawn to shapes created by harsh sun light around big cities like London. I came across this bridge in Shoreditch and saw this pocket of light and waited for the right moment (tricky as I shot this across a very busy London road). I am drawn to capturing lone people as much as I am capturing crowds. Perhaps it is because I am always so interested in individual stories. I always wonder where people are going, what they are feeling and what kind of day they are having.

I found this gentleman at the end of the train platform in the Lower East Side, NY.

His expression drew me in because it seemed like the type of sadness we all experience but reserve for our private moments and spaces.

To me it was a beautiful public display of vulnerability.

This photo was taken during the Black Lives Matter protest in NYC after the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. I was capturing the unrest of people who are tired of a system that continues to oppress and kill black people without consequence.

This photo captures the beautiful tragedy, heroism, moral fortitude, and even irony of a black man who works to put out a fire to protect the community while living in a society that does little to protect him from the fires designed to destroy him.

Walking on Water is from the series, “Light at the End of My Window,” photographs made during the Covid-19 lockdown period in NYC. Like many others, the pandemic has been a harrowing experience that tested my faith. Shifting my gaze away from the four corners of my space, I turned to document my street. While I saw moments of pain and sorrow, I also saw moments of hope and was reminded of the light that never left.

I was photographing a protest outside the office of the NY Attorney General demanding justice for Daniel Prude, a 41-year-old Black man who died after being restrained by the Rochester Police in March 2020. I watched as this man repeatedly pounded his fists on the glass wall of the office building. After a few moments with his head up, he bowed his head and suddenly appeared to be an anonymous person who could be anyone and everyone. At this moment, he conveyed a powerful sense of sorrow, grief, and anger, despite his face not being visible.

This couple is a part of my larger series, Beach Lovers, an ongoing documentation of intimate moments shared by couples on the beaches of NYC. It was July 4th, 2019, and the beach was packed with people. I was drawn to this couple for a couple of reasons: it was incredibly hot, and their bodies were glistening. Their lazy, intimate entwined beach nap stopped me in my tracks. The book title was the lucky, fateful twist that brought this image together. It speaks to the core of this series, a claiming of public space for private tenderness.

Beach Lovers is a series of intimate moments shared by couples at the beaches of NYC. These moments hold intimate gestures of couples; some tender, rubbing sunscreen on a partner's back; others lustful, a deep kiss in the water. ‘Arm in Arm’ was taken as I observed a long back and forth walk of an older couple on the beach. The intimate way they were taking in silence while holding hands touched me deeply. Their coupled, familiar stride and deepened sun lines told me they had taken this walk for many years together, epitomizing the love this series embodies.

I started this work by closely observing my mother in the rhythm of everyday life at home. The relationship that my mother established with home in the repetitive cycle of her everyday life was the reason that led me to question the notion of home. Looking closely at the domestic affairs, which seemed peaceful while standing at a certain distance, I realized what kind of violence was actually involved. For this woman, “the interior of home is full of traps.” So what is home? “Is home a word, or is it something you carry with you?” I tried to get further into the notion of home by asking myself this question often. As I thought about it, the body began to appear in my photos as a representation of home. They appeared to me as breathing, changing, and recording beings. The body here made me comprehend that home is a living subject. In this case, home turns into a place of both mutual complicity and testimony. How can the house turn into an uncanny place at the same time when it is a sheltered area for us?

As I walked into home, I realized that I was starting to move the body out of home. I started this series by taking photos of my mother and continued by taking photos of other housewives in my family. In this project, the meaning of home called into being in my childhood world, in the images that are still alive at the stops that it visited. Thus I photographed the meaning, the feeling of home in me, that what it looks like, with remainders from my childhood land.

I titled this photo "Fiesta Farewell," capturing the aftermath of a lively fiesta in a small Spanish town. In the frame, you'll find a group of people wearing vibrant red and white uniforms, showcasing their active participation in the celebration. There's a subtle weariness in their body language, signaling the end of the festivities. The photo reflects the bittersweet moment of saying goodbye to the joyous event, holding onto the warmth of shared experiences and cultural celebration.

I was strolling along the Coney Island beach, when I came across a woman with beautiful tattoos on the gymnastics bar, training for the circus. I marveled at her tremendous strength and talent. My lens began to fill in with others either exercising or watching the circus babe. I waited patiently, hoping everyone would align perfectly.

It was New Year’s Day, 2024, the day of the Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge. As I stood on the beach swaddled in a down coat, hat, and gloves, I watched people dressed in their swimwear race to the water’s edge, pause, take a deep breath, and dive into the frigid water. Then the sun peeked through the clouds; bathers rejoiced as they took another swig of champagne and braved one more plunge.

My photo was captured in Sultan Rushy in Kayseri/Turkey. This place lays down in the piedmont of the imposing Mount Erciyes and actually called as a heaven for birds. It ıs not only heaven for birds, also for one who wants to have a break from stressful daily life. You can find a peace in the twitter of the birds and even feel the freedom of the wind by riding horse.

I was standing in front of a market stall of a butcher in Amsterdam. I observed the dogs and was waiting for the perfect shot, and this shot made me very happy, because of the way the dog looks into the camera, and the other one is waiting between the other customers.

In my favorite area of France I was walking around the beach when I saw this man. The image gave me a warm feeling and made me smile. He was clearly enjoying the sun, and it shows me how little you need to enjoy life. I chose this composition because of the black shirt: it looked like a shadow to me.

I took this photo in Paris. I did not think, passing by chance on this street, that I would see colored walls. I'm used to photographing the colorful streets of Nice, my city, and I was attracted by this small, flashy stadium wedged between buildings.

The sun is beating down in this late morning of July, and part of the stadium is in shade. I like to play with colors and shadows. I stayed a moment to photograph the players who came in and out of the dark, as well as the ball.

I have always been fascinated by Faith. During the period I lived in Delhi, I was in contact for the first time with Islam, and this beautiful religion deeply intrigued me. I took this picture during one of many visits to Masjids in Old Delhi. The compositions of shadows and faces are fertile ground for inspiration and imagination. The gaze of the faithful immersed in their prayers, often unaware of their surroundings, is one of my favorite subjects. I always wonder what is going on in their minds.

I was taking a workshop on Street Photography in New York, and I decided to work on a series on the NYC Subway. I knew that there were plenty of other series about the NYC Subway and that it could be thought of as unoriginal, but to me, the subway remains highly symbolic, and I felt very attracted to its dark and shabby vibe. As I worked on my series, I felt increasingly drawn to ghostly, mysterious images.

I remember the moment I took this picture very well. I was behind a glass window, trying to play with some reflections and then I saw that woman. For a moment, it felt as if time stood still. It was not one of those pictures that you take in a rush but one where you are slowly drawn into the scene. Standing somewhere between layers of light and reflection, and with a lost gaze, she invited me to a melancholic space, beyond beautiful faces and unattended thoughts.

I happened upon a parade celebrating the official opening of the first day of Parliament in Nassau, Bahamas. All of the women were dressed in their Sunday finest, parading the streets proud and beautiful!

This young Orthodox Jewish boy along with his elders were showing their support for Palestine at a protest in London. It was the end of the day and it's likely he was tired. I noticed him as I was leaving. I was captivated by his gaze and body position - slightly protective and he's sat as if hiding behind the members of his community. The Orthodox Jewish community keep to themselves and it seems he is trying to do that whilst waiting patiently for it to be finished.

On a late afternoon, a striking older woman from the Mwila tribe arrives at a small market near Lubango (Southern Angola). Mwila women are famous for their necklaces and their hair styled with beads. I was thrilled to see a Mwila woman in a traditional style. As she walks towards me, I decide to photograph her in front of the warm ochre wall to create a strong contrast with her colorful garments. As I look thru my lens, I realize that the people behind me are creating shadows on the wall, which I then include in my image.

Bangladesh, and particularly Dhaka, is well-known for overcrowded commuting trains. But the crowd is never as large as it is during the Bishwa Ijtema, a three-day annual gathering of Muslims held in Tongi, a small town on the outskirts of Dhaka. For three days, I had been photographing large groups of pilgrims arriving by train, quickly making their way to the pilgrimage site to join in for prayers. The last morning of the festival was particularly hectic: thousands and thousands of devotees had left the trains to be in time for the final and most meaningful prayer. After three full days of non-stop coming and going, the train station felt deserted.

As I was making my way to the pilgrimage site, I saw someone’s feet sticking out of the window. Trying to see inside the train, I saw his head. I photographed him and then was debating whether to wake him up so that he could join the gathering. But suddenly, another pilgrim jumped out of the train, which woke up my new "friend". He looked startled for a minute and then started to run.

For generations, Irish Travellers had been travelling around the country in horse-drawn wagons. Now, the Travellers are no longer “nomads,” most of them living in caravans on official “halting” sites. Though the children of the Travellers have only experienced a settled life, I was struck by how much they still identify with their culture even though they now live in an environment made of concrete slabs. The Travellers are religious, and large families are the norms. Gender roles are clearly defined even for the youngest of children. But perhaps the stronger link to the culture is the connection to horses.

Kejetia is a vast market in Kumasi, Ghana. I got lost in it, and I was trying to find my way out when I stumbled on this young girl with a colorful skirt sitting alone in front of a blue wall. It was strange to see her alone, as there were people everywhere. I wanted to capture her sitting quietly, but I also wanted to show the intensity of her surroundings. It did not take long for people to walk in my frame of her and add the energy I wanted to convey.

From a previous trip to West Africa, I was familiar with the Celestial Church, the white attire, and the hat women devotees wear when they attend church service. I had just arrived in Lomé, the capital of Togo. On a random walk, I noticed these women resting and chatting, presumably after attending a service, sitting in front of a gray wall where white circles had been painted. Amazed by the juxtaposition of the hats and the circles, I quickly photographed them. A minute later, they were on their way.

I took this photo during a football training session in my local town, Beckenham, UK in 2021. I was asked to take some photos of a special football session, and I was lucky to capture this boy while he was practicing with his football.

After two years of shooting on the street, looking for the “right moment” to catch, I felt the need to look for something more compelling, something with more of a story to tell. This is how I heard about an event happening on the Italian Adriatic Coast, called “Summer Jamboree,” in which people from all over the world were gathering to dress and dance like the 40’s and the 50’s in America. As soon as I got there, I became totally fascinated by the atmosphere. Everybody in town was dressed and styled like the people from that period. My impression was that they weren’t dressing just for the occasion but that behind their style there was a philosophy of life they identified with. For example, I was attracted by this man because of his shiny light blue suit and intense expression. The woman with a surprised face behind him completed the photo.

This photo was taken during an annual event on the Adriatic coast of Italy, where people from all over the world dress is 40s and 50s American clothing. I was attracted by this woman's huge, pink flower on her hat, which matched her dress.

The photo was taken during Napoli Pride 2023. I loved the dresses of these women, the colored feathers and flowers of their hairstyles, as well as their makeup. They seemed coming out out of a fairytale.

Since I moved to Santa Monica, I've been fascinated by its residential neighborhoods and their "flip side,” the back alleys. Hidden from the apparent uniformity of the streets, there are clues, objects, messages that tell us who we are, what we believe in, and how different we are from each other. I have danced and documented these gatherings for several months now. They were conceived when the pandemic peaked, bridging the gap between private and public space while transcending both generational and societal spheres.

The same qualities I cultivate in my photographic approach also inform this dance: it happens on the street, people are immersed in their surroundings, it is unpredictable – in order for it to happen, one must show up and go with the flow.

The woman in the foreground reminds me of an ancient priestess performing a ritual. She seems to hold the (luminous) keys to the city.

It was Sunday. My dad had promised to take me to a village to eat. We drove from Zamora to Carapan in Michoacan. Once we arrived at the restaurant, I saw this guy who I perceived just as masculine as feminine. He was the only male working at the place. Before leaving, I went to the kitchen to thank them for the delicious food we had eaten, then I found him at the other side of the kitchen. I had my camera in my hand. Exactly when I pressed the shutter button he turned to me. I knew I had something.

The picture is taken during February Venice/Italy Carneval. I was by a man walking with something around his head. As he was passing by me, I pushed the button and I realized he had something like a hat on his head in the form of butterflies.

Identical twins astonish me. I’m enchanted by the echo and shaken out of any daze daily living might impose. The universe reminds me that we are magical. I made this photograph on my way to get groceries. I usually take my camera with me on errands. The twins were out for a walk with their brother. No plans, just a stroll in the sunshine to see what caught their fancy. We chatted effortlessly about our neighborhood and the changes happening while I made pictures. Twins are a paradox, as is photography. Once I look past the surface, distinctions emerge.

It’s late autumn 2020. Despite the sunshine, Hell’s Kitchen feels sombre, ghostlike. A flash of red catches my eye. I feel the familiar rush of excitement that comes with seeing a good photograph. A pulse of fear follows, knowing that I am going to cross the invisible line that exists between strangers, especially in cities. I step over the line, past my fear, and break the silence. She tells me she used to model and looks forward to the end of this pandemic. We only speak for a couple of minutes, but the exchange lifts us up above the gloom.

Residents watch the streets below from their balconies in an apartment block in Nairobi's sprawling Mathare slum.

Mathare is one of Nairobi's oldest slums. The first residents started arriving here in the 1920s. Now there are around 200,000 in Mathare’s 13 villages (according to a 2012 study) living in shacks densely built along winding and narrow muddy alleys. These streets and balconies are always busy with the hustle and color of Mathare’s everyday life.

It was a Thursday night in NYC, and this young woman was waiting for the subway. I was drawn to the contrast between the gritty, dirty subway and her graceful beauty. I was also drawn to the color palette – the saturated blue-green color of both her dress and the iron post. I find backs can be very expressive, and hers, being so exposed, even more so. I made the photograph right before the train arrived – she got in and left the station.

This photo is part of a on going project with the name of the verse by the italian poet Pasolini: "They teach you not to shine. And you shine, though". Its aim is to focus the attention on young women and all the obstacles and struggles they have to overcome to built "a room for their own" in this society. In this pic, a young girl and an old lady are watching themselves in two different mirrors, a real one and a memory one. A distance between what the girl is and what the woman would have liked to become.

On a typical Saturday morning, I was walking in a little village when I saw a group of wedding guests trying to shelter from the Spanish autumn sun while they were waiting to see the bride. I was impressed by the warm light between the shadows and the sensuality of their movements which seemed to anticipate the union between the bride and the broom they would celebrate.

I took this photo when I was out shooting with another fellow street photographer. I watched a man placing mirror behind a van and decided to take a shot. I noticed how the lines diverted into a pretend road. I loved the illusion the mirror made with these lines and called it 'bending reality'. I felt quite pleased that I managed to shoot something that is mundane in every day life but actually looks interesting.

This photo was taken in a rural village near Lahore in Pakistan. It is part of a project I'm working on the Punjab and the Partition of 1947. I took this photo because it reveals the different visual layers of life in a small Punjabi village. It's a fun image and has a slightly complicated composition which helps the viewer engage with the scene. The bright red colour nicely completes the image.
My aim with this image is to show how similar in terms of culture the Punjab in India and the Punjab in Pakistan are. Children play on the streets after school. Life unfolds on the streets in a gentle and slow pace. Punjabis are warm and extremely hospitable. There are two Punjabs divided in two by a wall, but there is only one soul.

This is a photo taken in light of Istanbul project. First I saw the shadow of the tree, which reflects and contrasts on the side wall of the building. Then I thought, "If someone passes here, it would be a great frame. I waited for a long time. He passed. I knew it was going to be a good photo.

Noise, energy, movement: these are some of the things that one would expect from an American parade. I came upon a town that was holding such a parade, the first since COVID hit. However, as three pageant women waited on a vintage car to enter the parade line, everything was unusually still, almost frozen in time. My intent was to capture the emotion between expectation and calm to provide a hypnotic sense of tension. These women are framed with two vehicles, the truck symbolizing their journey ahead and the camper representing shared adventure, friendship, and our social nature.

Children are experts of being in the present moment. Fortunately, I got a great opportunity to learn how they seize their moments while I did my photography job. This is a part of the photo series I did in rural Vietnam. In this work, I focused on children who had pure emotions and non-filtered raw expressions which seemed like the essentials of human nature. I felt they were tiny-shaped originals of true humanity. I would like to share this touching experience I've got from them with people who desire an intellectual/sensible voyage.

Quoting Robert Adams on Edward Hopper's artwork, "However much Hopper anguished over the displacement of nature, he never abandoned the city because, in addition to the compassion he felt for those who lived there, he reliably found in the city one remaining natural element—sunlight. With it, nothing was irredeemable."

Similarly, I found my vocation through a fascination with light, capturing it with intuitive and emotional commitment. In this photo, captured moments before the Macy's Day Parade began, a young sousaphone player paused, basking in the sun's kiss—a fleeting refuge amidst the brewing chaos and excitement.

This moment was captured in the La Défence district of Paris. This district has special place in my heart. It is known for its morning hustle, people rushing to work with coffee in hand, lots of people with their destinies getting lost in this concrete jungle. The pigeons represent a piece of nature, reminding us that the people are not alone here, and that even a pigeon can get lost in their thoughts.

A woman with a black cat passes with her traditional Islamic uniform Abaia in one of the old streets of Baghdad. I felt the distinctness of the composition in this moment so I captured it.

A checkpoint in the city of Karbala, where all the women in this city wear the black Islamic abaya: a beggar woman sits, and behind her is the checkpoint for women heading to the shrine of Imam Hussein, as this shrine is a destination for many Muslims in Iraq. The scene of the women's veil with a poster behind her about supporting the Islamic veil in this region was special and attractive to me. For this reason, I picked up my camera and took this picture.

My three weeks in Tokyo were a street photographer’s dream. Exploring the city one day, I was intrigued by the visual possibilities at this designated smoking area near Sinjuku train station. For more than half an hour I sat against a wall and shot the changing tableaus, waiting and hoping for all the elements to come together in the frame at a peak moment. My patience was rewarded! This is probably my favorite image from the trip.

It was Memorial Day, the beginning of the 2019 summer season in Coney Island, and the joy was unmistakable. No one could have imagined that only a year later the amusement park would have to shut down all summer because of a global pandemic. But Coney Island has survived a lot, and I’m sure it will survive this too. Can’t wait to go back.

Shooting one day in Coney Island, I was struck by these dressed-up girls in their identical outfits. I had to go over and ask if I could take their picture. Lucky for me, they agreed. The pose they struck was their own.

Captured on Fitzgerald Ave, near central Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand: I felt an immediate zing when I saw the glam pink jacket and headgear contrasting with the mundane city background. She posed for me while sneaking a quick vape before she continued on to a function. The mask and suburban blue car provides the moment with a time period, but her stance and outfit could be in the past or future.

Oaxaca, a city in southern Mexico, is known for it’s rich cultural heritage, proud indigenous people, and colorful colonial architecture. There is a wonderful contrast between centuries old traditions thriving alongside burgeoning modern buildings, an expanding culinary community and the contemporary clothing of many Oaxacan people. Here, a woman running in high red stiletto heels, is equally likely to be going to a business meeting, local street market, or lively night club. Mesmerized by those fabulous shoes and the vibrant colors of her outfit, I darted after her. I was able to take just a few images before she disappeared down a bustling cobblestone street. For me, the woman in this photograph represents the wonders of Oaxaca, a city filled with brilliant colors and unabashed exuberance.

Spending the day in Williamsburg, NY, is always a bit like going back in time. It is home to a small community of Orthodox Jews who follow centuries old traditions and customs. The high contrast in this photo, coupled with the scale difference between man and street lamp, felt like a metaphor for a community that lives in stark contrast to its neighbors and whose numbers diminish each year, as modern times trump this conservative and traditional lifestyle.

I took this photo during the wonderful Observations Photography Festival in Iserlohn, Germany. As we crossed this playground on our way from one exhibition venue to the next, we noticed this boy wrapped in plastic foil. While my friends went into the exhibition, I stayed at this place for quite a while, observing and taking photos again and again. At first the boy didn't pay attention to me, then there was a point when he registered me briefly, I smiled at him, after that I was accepted and became invisible in a way.

I took the picture during a visit to a fun fair. I always love it to take pictures there. I am drawn to the artificial worlds, the shrieking happy children, and the human's perceptible longings. I think it is also my own memory of my childhood which drives me there.

The situation shown in the picture appeals to me emotionally. For me it is an image that tells a story and makes other people's feelings tangible - with a dose of humor. It is also interesting that you maybe do not directly recognize whether it is a fun or serious moment.

I didn't actually plan to take pictures that day. I was on my way to my parents, but arrived at the station much too early. In order not to get bored while waiting for the train, I unpacked my camera and stroll around near the train station and the cathedral. Many areas were still in the shade. A lot of people, especially tourists, were drawn to a sunny place in front of the cathedral. I observed the goings-on there and waited for a special situation. This occurred when a family with her daughter, who tried to put on her mother's sunglasses, appeared. It was a funny situation because the glasses just didn't fit, but the daughter tried with great patience to put them on to imitate her mother. Simultaneously, there was a woman who, with her eyes closed, raised her face to the sun. You could feel her enjoying the sun's rays. I was thrilled and immediately took several pictures because even more happened at the same time and you had to keep an eye on different levels. I was very excited and hoped to get at least one good picture. Wished I could have stayed there longer, but I had to go back to the station to get the train. Later I looked at the taken photos and was very happy with my yield and glad that I - as almost always - carried my camera with me.

I was crossing the square in front of the Cologne Cathedral when suddenly these two veiled women passed me at the side. They were very conspicuous in the midst of the summerly dressed people in the sun. As always, I had my camera with me. I ran past them, took a slightly different route and positioned myself round the corner in the hope that they would turn right and that I had the chance to take a picture of them from the front. I was really thrilled that it worked, and in particular as I realized that the background goes very well with the two figures.

I was strolling through the city center, when this person with the mask ran into me. I was so fascinated by this apparition that I immediately pressed the shutter. I stayed close to the person to took many pictures with different levels. Then I guessed that the guy was walking towards the station, and I ran ahead, positioned myself there and photographed him a few more times as he passed, hoping that a good picture with an interesting scenery would emerge. All this happened in just a few minutes that made my heart beat faster.

I took this photo in Valencia, Spain, in 2023. After a few days in the city and many kilometres on foot, I discovered this very busy square between the train station, shopping district, and sights. I love the challenge of finding pictures in particularly busy places that are interesting and give some order to the chaos. The trigger was the woman on the phone with the striking red skirt. Next to me, another woman stopped and looked around, blinked, and I pressed the shutter a few times, hoping that a good composition would emerge.

Marie is a cheerful little girl. She is always in motion, dancing and entertaining everyone around. I managed to photograph her unnoticed through the window of the room. She was quiet, serious and had her head in the clouds.

In a small town, people were celebrating the end of winter. Everyone was happy, and a band was playing on the stage, but one boy was pensive. He didn't even notice that I was taking his picture. Even little boys can have a great full moon.

February 2021, exhausted, I had just arrived in Rio from Paris. I was shocked by both the beauty of the Ipanema scenery and the vivid life here. A sense of freedom and joyful carelessness radiate from the numerous football players along the beach. This image portrays one of the few girls playing. It was taken when the world, Brazil particularly, was facing extremely dramatic Covid-19 challenges. Suspended in time, this golden hour in Ipanema felt surreal. Among the global chaos, life goes on.

Some years back, I saw these people at a crosswalk. This scene spoke to me so strongly, and I knew: I could not grab my small camera fast enough. The people, colors, juxtapositions; similarities/differences, young/old, solitude/multitudes, loving/caring, and the kinds of baggage and/or individuals we carry and keep. Strangers from different stations in life, one not knowing the other. I believe I captured the irony, humor, tragedy, love, humanity, all in a color palette that unifies. I do not think they noticed me. I felt happy, and now I have this slice of life photograph.

It is held the third weekend of May every year. Locals parade around the neighborhood carrying portable shrines with God’s spirit inside.

This year was very special, being the first time in three years it had been held since Covid.

Walking through the Old Medina at sunset, locals gathered in Fez, as market vendors began to close, this lady crossed my path, we locked eyes for a millisecond and parted ways.

Arley, who was turning the hula hoops around in an empty park, wore a white, curly wig and red lipstick. It was lucky that while Aley focused on the hula hoops, I was able to capture Arley's expression up close.

Commissioned by playwright Gerald Lepkowski to produce images for his Melbourne International Arts Festival production Dark - The Adventures of Diane Arbus, I contacted the Australian Multiple Births Association asking if they knew of parents who would be interested in having their twin children be photographed to be featured on huge screens as part of the plays theatrical set.

I was clear from the outset of the type of Arbus-like imagery I wanted to create. Subsequently, I only had two families get back to me. Courtney and Kate, 6-year-old identical twin girls stopped me in my tracks. Like any kids their age, the twins mucked around between takes, joking and jostling with each other. It took a while before they could take direction, stand still, and pose out on the street.

The bond was clear; Courtney would start a sentence and Kate would finish it. Or maybe Kate started, and Courtney finished. They were mirror images, perfectly symmetrical in their facial expressions, the way they held themselves.

I think this is part of why the image still provokes such a strong reaction from viewers, as I recently discovered when posting to my Instagram. The mystery and strength that comes from being an identical twin; the idea that you are simultaneously your own entity, as well as one half of a whole.

What could be more powerful that a group of 30 feminist women in red swimsuits, of all shapes and sizes, performing a water ballet called, “Crimson Tide: A Period Drama,” that represented the four, distinct, emotional phases of the menstrual cycle in an endeavor to destigmatize periods?

The photograph of the Clams performing their sell-out water ballet was taken at the Northcote Aquatic and Recreational Centre in 2017 as a fundraiser for Share the Dignity, a non-profit organization that works to ensure disadvantaged women throughout Australia have access to essential sanitary items.

Many inhabitants of Binondo, Manila in The Philippines live in very small accommodation, so they spent most of their time outside. Working, sleeping, eating and entertainment all find place in the streets, while there also is traffic all over. It's a joy to walk around there and take photos of daily life.

Here we see a mother tending her toddlers and keeping her dog in place, while a man is sleeping on the background and another woman carries a child away.

This photo was taken during one of my photo walks in downtown Boston. When I photograph, I am drawn to reflections and color. When photographing a reflection, I feel as though I am not photographing the subject directly in front of me but rather depicting a surreal world where multiple layers, colors, and textures come together.
